Build a Vertical Storage Rack for Cans

By Monika Williams

Issue #155 • September/October, 2015

I'm always trying to get a hold of alternative ways to make use of the small area I have to retailer food. Then there's the issue of rotating my saved items. I normally keep numerous canned foods readily available always and it may be difficult to ensure I apply the “out with the outdated, in with the new” rule.

So I made up our minds to make a rotating can rack. I chose this particular design because of the minimal floor area it calls for, since this hangs vertically on the wall.

I made these racks to fit the wall house I had available. I chose to make 4 smaller racks instead of a giant one. I did this because of my personal storage wishes. This particular rack holds 17 cans in every of the vertical rows and one shelf at the finish holds 16 tuna cans. This design is lovely simple; you can make a choice any form of picket you need. We had many of the lumber readily available, but we did have to purchase some from the native lumber yard.

These racks can be made to suit your available house. I have made three of these so far, all placed on the same wall.

Building the racks

Materials wanted:

plywood (I used OSB board 7/16″ 4’x8′) — the size is determined by how large you are going to make your rack. I had a 4’x8′ sheet and had masses left over to make a 2nd rack. 1″x4″x8′ — the number of these depends on how many rows you're putting in 1″x2″x8′ — once more, the quantity relies on the choice of rows 2’x4′ — a scrap piece works effective for this. You best need about 6 inches or so. handful of screws (I used 1½” drywall screws I had mendacity around) drill energy saw tape measure pencil

First off, you wish to have to test your partitions for studs and ensure you'll be able to attach the can rack into the studs.

As shown in Picture 1, the OSB board is lower to 48″ tall and 30″ large. The backside baseboard is solely a work of OSB board minimize to six inches deep and 30 inches huge. I attached the ground baseboard from underneath.

In Picture 2, I cut the 1×Four forums to check the length of the OSB board — Forty eight inches. I reduce six of those for this actual rack. I attached the cut 1x4s at the outer edges first. These I then placed flush on the interior fringe of the OSB board. The ultimate 1x4s I placed vertically at 4½-inch intervals.

I in most cases do a test run at this level just to make sure the cans are going to roll well. This is a superb time to mend any mishaps.

Next, I reduce some 1x2s to place vertically alongside all of the vertical 1x4s. The placement of the 1x2s will act as helps to each row so the cans don’t fall out. The 1x2s are lower to 32 inches, then connected alongside the 1x4s. The 1x2s on the far left and a ways proper of the rack are put on best of the 1×4, flush with the outer edge. The rest of the 1x2s are positioned so that there is about ½” on each side of the 1×4. I additionally connected a 1×2 along the ground baseboard to behave as a stopper so the entire cans don’t roll out immediately. The completed rack in Picture Four might lend a hand put this step into viewpoint.

The next step comes to placing the horizontal helps on the best and backside of the rack. I used 1x4s for this as well. I minimize two 1x4s to 30 inches and positioned the first one about Three inches from the highest of the rack. This lets in a bit of of house to your hand when hanging cans in from the highest. I placed the second one 1×4 4½ inches from the bottom of the rack. This lets in for just one can to roll out at a time.

I then fashioned some wedges out of my scrap piece of 2×4, as you'll be able to see in Picture 3. I simplest have a power saw, so I used a square/directly edge to mark triangular-shaped items on the 2×4, then merely minimize them. I attached those wedges to the bottom of every row with screws inserted from the ground of the rack. One screw according to wedge worked simply fine.

I sought after to modify up the design a bit on the third and final rack that I made, so I added 4 horizontal cabinets within the last column. I lower 3 6½” 1x4s and positioned these 12 inches apart. I used these little cabinets for a few of my odd-shaped, smaller cans. Tuna, tomato paste, and Vienna sausages all fit nicely on these shelves.

Depending on how you need your ultimate product to appear, you'll be able to paint or stain your rack now. Or, it is advisable to have carried out this previous to putting all of the pieces in combination. I selected to leave mine au naturel to match my other shelving techniques in my storage room.

When putting those racks, you want to make sure to attach them to a minimum of one stud — two is healthier. We had a bit of issue with this, since our studs aren’t placed on two-foot centers. But our racks are conserving great just being connected to at least one stud.

These racks crammed up briefly with cans. And I really like having freed up quite a lot of shelf house to retailer more of my home-canned items!
